The Saguaro Hotel

Saguaro Hotel Scottsdale

For you city slickers that aren’t from around these parts, it’s “sah WAR oh.” Like the big cacti with arms. Now that we’ve cleared that up and you don’t have to look foolish mispronouncing it, you’ve found a great place to stay in Old Town Scottsdale: The Saguaro Hotel [concept/story].

For the record, we loved it when it was The James, after a long stretch as (I think I’m recalling this right) a Holiday Inn. Then it was the Mondrian. Wow. Thankfully that didn’t last long.

Now back to a Southwestern/Mexican motif and no more stark white, you can once again enjoy “local” flavor and have a “local” place to which to refer out-of-town guests. They’ve got a great watering hole called “Old Town Whiskey” (I grew up about 20 miles from the Jack Daniels Distillery in Lynchburg, TN), and a very good restaurant that goes by “Distrito” (Spanish for “district”).

I can especially vouch for these items from their menu: Carne En Adobo (brisket), Arroz Con Crema (poblano creamy corn rice), and a Paloma (Sauza Hornitas with grapefruit soda, lime, salt on the rim) cocktail to wash it down.

This makes for a great post-City Council meeting debrief meal! Plus, it’s a short walk across the Civic Center Mall grass to the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Scottsdale Civic Center Public Library.

The Saguaro is also offering stacation packages for us locals, described here in a press release:
