Arizona Trailblazers Hiking Club

Yesterday I ran into some folks at Duke’s Sports Bar (McDowell and Miller) with a big topo map spread out on their table. These were not your ordinary tourists lost in the suburban wilderness of South Scottsdale. Curiosity killed the cat so I had to ask, “Are you trying to find something?”

“Just planning a hike,” was the polite reply. Turns out these were some folks from the Arizona Trailblazers Hiking Club.

From their website history page:

The Arizona Trailblazers Hiking Club begin as the Motorola Hiking Club. In the summer of 1996 several Motorolans, all avid hikers and outdoor lovers, got together and decided to organize a new club within Motorola. This club would be dedicated to the activities of hiking, backpacking, and camping and to the overall enjoyment, appreciation, and understanding of the vast outdoors of Arizona.

The Trailblazers site includes trip reports, a library of materials that members can check out, trip planning tips, and a comprehensive list of useful links. The “Lessons Learned” page is full of practical advice submitted by individual members.

Membership is only $25/year, which is a small price to access the camaraderie, collective knowledge, and resources of the club…and it’s FAR less expensive than your typical gym membership. So, Take a Hike!
