Erin Perrault in the city’s Long Range Planning Department sent this message and invitation to participate in the renewed visioning process for the General Plan Update. Please sign up ASAP. You can bet that the developers and zoning attorneys are busy recruiting participants even as you are reading this!
As active citizens and an active community group, I am emailing you to ask for your support in getting the word out to as many residents of Scottsdale as possible regarding the recent Council approval to host a Scottsdale Visioning Town Hall in February 2013. This will be the first step in the 2014 General Plan process.
The application process is now available online for you to access and I encourage you both to apply. I would also appreciate your assistance with encouraging any/all members of COGS to apply as well. All applications will be screened solely by Arizona Town Hall and applications made online will be sent directly to their organization. All hard copy applications should be mailed directly to Arizona Town Hall and not to city offices.
I am attaching a letter from the Mayor inviting community members to the application process and am including the following information below which I am requesting be posted on the COGS website as well as emailed directly to your membership (if possible), so that this information reaches your full membership quickly – the application period expires January 11, 2013.
Your Time To Act—Participate in the Scottsdale Visioning Town Hall
You have an opportunity to shape the future of your community by participating in the Scottsdale Visioning Town Hall. Participants will craft a draft vision statement for Scottsdale’s General Plan 2014 process. It’s a key first step in the community’s efforts to guide how the city matures over the next 20 years.
The Town Hall will take place over three half-day sessions on Feb. 6, 7 and 11, at the Monterra special events center at WestWorld. The application is available online through Jan. 11, at
The Arizona Town Hall organization is overseeing the Visioning Town Hall, including selecting the participants and facilitating the discussion. The nonprofit organization will pick about 100 participants who represent a broad, cross-section of the community.
The community visioning effort also will include a Future Leaders Town Hall from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, at the SkySong Innovation Center, 1475 N. Scottsdale Road. It’s open to the first 100 registrants, ages 16-22. Scottsdale’s young community members will share their hopes for the future of Scottsdale during this special event. I have submitted my application. I am willing to bet they will look for those with development experience and not those that have simply invested in living in Scottsdale. Those with a vision for Scottsdale when their kids grow up isn’t a trait this council wants in abundance. Of course, unless your children count shopping and eating at restaurants as their favorite activities vs. hiking, biking, and breathing clean air. I am sure the Mayor has strategically figured out the numbers and will let a few non-conforming thinkers through the door. I can see the quotes from the Council, “This General Plan is of the people, by the people, and for the people of Scottsdale.” Of course those people will likely be zoning attorneys, investors, developers, and construction interests. I may be wrong, but, if I were a betting man…and I am…the deck will once again be stacked in Lane’s favor.
